Season Of The Parody Blockbusters

LOS ANGELES, CA (AUGUST 4, 2010 ROADS TO MOSCOW) - LOS ANGELES, CA (AUGUST 2, 2010 ROADS TO MOSCOW) - Having recently wrapped production on his epic motorcycle thriller SPEED, Brad Armstrong is turning his attention to the popular parody genre. The 2010 XBIZ award winning writer/director is gearing up to shoot a series of ambitious satires for Wicked Pictures with his trademark style and attention to detail.

“This is something totally new for me, and I can’t wait to get started. I’ve been slow to enter the parody market, but it seems the mainstream audience, and even the producers of some of the original shows, are embracing parodies, so the timing feels right,” the filmmaker candidly reveals. “And in this market, it makes sense to acknowledge the prevailing trends.”

For his part, Wicked Pictures President And Owner Steve Orenstein is excited to see Armstrong expanding his horizons. ”Brad has had an amazing career in adult entertainment, spanning almost fifteen years and such releases as Conquest, Flashpoint, Euphoria, Dreamquest, Manhunters, Eternity, Coming Home, Fuck, Curse Eternal, Fallen, and last year’s 2040," he enthuses. "All of these movies were nominated for, or won, AVN’s Best Video or Best Film award when they were released. I'm excited to see him unleash his movie making abilities in the parody arena.”

Armstrong promises a Fall season's worth of satirical blockbusters, including XXX tributes to such TV shows and movies as the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, television's 24, the fan favorite Risky Business, and an epic Six Million Dollar Man / Bionic Woman pairing. Regarding the diversity of this roster, the director observes, “I’m planning on doing some serious titles and some comedies. I also want to take some titles that were originally dramas and add some humor.” 

Armstrong is quick to point out that his decision to enter the genre is the result of no small amount of careful research. “I’ve watched a lot of the parodies that have been done over the last two years. Some of them have been really good, while others have been a cheap disguise for bad 90s-style porn. But the distributors and consumers can’t seem to get enough. Some might say that parodies are fizzling out, but the numbers don’t lie. They’re still outselling most of the other product out there. It just feels like the right time to jump in and have some fun.”

The director continues, “I wanted to start with something REALLY fun like The Rocky Whore Picture Show. And because the music is so entwined with the movie, we approached the publishers/writers of the now world-famous soundtrack. We came so close to licensing it too. Out of the three people involved, two were cool with adult, but one said no. Man, that would’ve been cool! I guess porn’s climb into bed with mainstream still has a ways to go. So we’re switching gears and starting off with a bang instead. We are in pre-production of Almost 24, scheduled for late August or early September, with Randy Spears playing the heroic Jack Bauer character. So if you’re a big fan of 24 and are missing the countdown, you’ll soon be able to see the CTU gang in all their naked glory. Meanwhile, my musical team is working on remakes of ‘The Time Warp’ and other Rocky Horror classics. Good news is now we get to have a little fun ‘porn-ifying’ the lyrics.”

Indeed, while he may be best known for his dramatic Hollywood-style thrillers, this versatile director is no stranger to comedy. “I’ve done a number of romantic comedies over the years, like Fluff & Fold [which won jessica drake a much-deserved AVN Best Actress award], One Man’s Obsession, The Closer, and more recently, Spin The Bottle and Roommates, so I think my funny bone is still intact," the director observes.
"The real challenge will be finding movie and TV titles that haven’t already been pillaged,” he adds with a smile.

With a body of work that combines high production values with beautiful woman and sensual sex scenes, Brad Armstrong looks forward to creating parody blockbusters that exude his trademark sense of stylish eroticism.
